Nomad Adventure: Turkey in Black Tent

11-day experiential journey in the footsteps of the ancient Anatolian Turks and Lycians, in total immersion in their millennia-old culture that we will find in textiles, cuisine and local history. After discovering the mysteries of Istanbul, the journey will continue in our own way-the nomadic way! This will be our perception of the world for a week in the company of true nomads. The Black Tent will be our home, handwoven on a carpet loom by experienced weavers, and we will migrate from pasture to pasture. We will learn how to process wool, from fleece to rug, understand and implement the basics of textile weaving, and walk through forests and plains to arrive in one of the largest nomadic encampment areas in southwestern Anatolia. We will also learn how to make Anatolian Turkmen cheese and bread, which we will consume with our meals. We will visit the ancient cities of the Lycians, Hellenes, Romans and Byzantines, see their monumental art and crafts in museums, and try to imagine how glorious and rich these ethnic cultures were in ancient times.

Anatolia, Turkey’s peninsular region and the crossroads of ancient civilizations, is a fascinating region that holds centuries of history, culture and traditions. This vast plateau, with its enchanting valleys, mountain ranges and fertile plains, is a mosaic of landscapes that reflect the meeting of East and West. Here, every nook and cranny tells a story thousands of years in the making, from the remains of ancient empires such as the Hittites and Romans, to the underground cities of Cappadocia and monasteries perched in the mountains. One of the most fascinating aspects of Anatolia is its nomadic heritage, still visible today in the Turkmen communities that inhabit the region. Turkmen nomads are the custodians of an ancient tradition, when their tribes traversed these lands with herds and families, living in harmony with nature. Their tents are true symbols of this wandering life: built of natural materials and decorated with traditional motifs, they offer a warm and authentic welcome to anyone wishing to immerse themselves in this culture. In Turkmen camps, nomads live according to the rhythms of nature, practicing ancient crafts such as carpet weaving and making yogurt and cheese using traditional methods. On our trip The Black Tent we immerse ourselves in their culture and share a meal prepared over a fire, enjoying the authentic flavor of Anatolian cuisine and listening to stories passed down from generation to generation.
